The New Hebrides
THREATENING STATE OP AFFAIRS. Fbeutebs telegrams! Melbouene, September 9. Further advices from Mr McDonald the New Hebrides missionary, report that a French Company are forcing through laud belonging to the Presbyterian mission, and of which the Synod trustee title is perfect. The French commandant claimed compensation, and threatened to burn the houses on the mission land on a most hollow pretext. McDonald appeals to Admiral Tryon and the English and German Governments for protection. Deep feeling has been excited in the islands hy the action of the French commandant, which will probably lead to disastrous results. Received September 11, 12.45 p.m. Melboubne, This Day. Sir Henry Loch has consented to ask Admiral Tryon whether a man-of-war is available for despatch to the New Hebrides for the purpose of protecting the interests of British subjects in those Islands.
