Glove Contest at Wanganui

The second trial of skill with the gloves between Pettengell and Lees came off last night at the Princess Theatre, which, contrary to general expectation, was paoked to its extremity by an eager and expectant audience. Both men seemed to have taken full advantage of the time that had elapsed since their last meeting, each, appearing to be thoroughly confident of success. The match occupied six, rounds. Lees looked as if he had much the better of it. In the last two % hovrever, Petteueell adopted different tactics to those that he had been using previously, and quickly put his opponent "hoia de combat." His superior strength aud stamina, too, stood him in good stead, and enabled him to force his opponent to the finish. Lees received some very severe punishment in the concluding rounds, and took it very pluckily, coming up strictly to time on every occasion. It was plainly seen, however, that Pettengell had him at his mercy, and only required time to give him the " coup de grace." On the signal being given for the commencement of the seventh round, Lees found himself unable to undertake it, and the sponge was accordingly thrown up. Leea then came forward and declared himself fairly beaten. Messrs Watson and Hudson were the seconds for Pettengell and Lees respectively, Mr Stephenson (»f Nelson) referee, and Mr C. H. Charanne, time-keeper .
