The Floods

The heavy rains that have fallen this week hare been unprecedented in the history of the settlement. Yesterday the Makino was flooded higher than it has ever been. The lower portion of Denbigh street was covered, the stream flowing over it like a millrace. Considerable damage has been done to the approaches of Manchester street bridge, but not sufficient to interfere with traffic. The other bridges are reported as having escaped tolerably well owing to the excellence of the work put in them. The trains were interrupted by a big slip on the Fordell incline, and passengers had to be earned by coach to and from Wanganui. Yesterday's Wellington mails did not reach Feilding until this morning. It is expected the line will be clear this afternoon as large gangs of men are at work shifting the debris, and replacing the ballast where it was washed away. A heavy gale has been blowing all day.
