Captain Kenny, M.L.C.. will accept the position of commisHtoner to enquire into tlie claims of old soldiers', and that the first meeting of the commission will be held at Wanganui on the 16th instant. Westpobt. September 1. Michael Dnacoll, employed at the harbour railway works, was killed by a falling tree. This Day. Wm. Merton, a baker on board the Rimutaka died of apoplexy last night. He had heen suffering for several days. Another battery of six-pounders is expected shortly. Two guns will be *up plied each to Lyttelton, Timarn, and Oamaru batteries. The Engineer- in-Chief Mt to-day to inspect the damage done to tho Oamaru breakwater in thn late gales. M r Kennedy (?) has not yet nccepted a position on the Soldiers Claims Com* mission. A definite aimwer in expected | to-morrow, and if n t then received it i* understood th<- Government hay* another gentleman in view who will act. The Customs returns for the month show a great falling off in tho principal ports. Auckland, £21,162; Wellinuton, £20,687 ; Christchurch, £18.511 ; Dunedin. £27,578 ; total for the celony, £108,---641, as against £121,026 for August last year. The commission to enquire into the claims of old soldiers will sit ss follows : — Wanganui, September 20th, and 21st , New Plymouth, 23rd and 24th ; Auckland, 28th, 29th, aud 30th; Thames, .October 4th snd sth ; Napier, 11th and 12th. Fourteen days notice of sitting will be given by advertisement and claims will hare to be sent in in writing to the Post Office of each town befcre the commission sits. Gisboene, This Day. Exactly at midnight a severe shock of earthquake was felt here. It stopped the clocks, snd alarmed the inhabitants. It was one ot the heaviest felt in the district.
