John Mercer was indicted for shoo ting a sheep and stealing the carcase at Kingstone, Lake Wakitipu. The accused, who is now serving a term of imprison* ment for sfcealingja R i lway Department tarpaulin and fish ing nets, was alleged to hare shot sheep off various runs, and to hare thus supplied his workmen with meat. The jury were unable to agree, and were lucked up for several hour*. They then returned a verdict of guilty, and the accused was sentenced to two years' hard lnbor. Chkistcuubch, August 27. A snowstorm occurred here to-day. It was heavier than it had been for 12 years. Snow is lying in ti>e streets four incites deep. The tram car* are seriously hindered, but there is no interruption to the railway. ASHBUETON, August 27. It snowed heavily yesterJny up to 7 oelock, and began again this morning, and has continued at intervals. It is the heaviest full »i snow ever experienced here.
