Accident to the Tui

(PEB UNITED PHKBB ASSOCIATION.)

Weixikgtuh, August 25.

The steamer Tui, bound from Wellington to Fox ton, had a narrow escape yesterday from going ashore at the mouth of the Manawatu river The signals hoisted were to take the bar, but when the steamer took the entrance there was not sufficient water, and she bumped heavily and carried away her stern post and rudder, and broke two blades of the propeller. Captain Pope, with the aid of a jury rudder, stood to sea and arrived here this morning. He estimates the damage of £200, and attributes the accident to signals being hoisted that the bar was navigable.
