Some further information relative to the late census has been given by the Registrar-General.. The population (excluding, the Maoris) of the respective provincial districts is given as follows : — Auckland .. ..130,379 Taranaki ... .. 17,999 Wellington . . . . 77,536 Hawke's Bay . . . . 24,568 Marlborough . . .. 11,113 Nelson.. .. .. 30,203 Westland .. .. 15,931 Canterburj .. . 121,400 Otago 149,154 Total .. 578,283 Tie total number of Chinese in the colony is given at 4,540. Of the houses, there are 10,000 with only one room, and 21,000 with more than six rooms. The empty houses number 953 in "Wellington, 2154 in Canterbury, 2470 in Otago, and 2659 in Auckland. The most populous ward in any borough in the colony is Cook ward, Wellington, which Las 11,310 inhabitants ; Smith ward, Auckland, comes next with 9,350 ; Leith ward, Dunedin, follows with 865 1 ; and Ponsonby, Auckland, and Te Aro, Wellington-, hay« 7323 and 7(535 respectively.
