In the Legislative Assembly this morning at 3 o'clock, the Government pro* poial to increase the duty on woollens to 20 per cent, instead of 25 per cent., as j demanded by the Opposition, was carried by 46 to 23. The Rev. J. G. Paton, the well-known | New Hebrides missionary, waited on the Premier on Thursday last in reference to the landing of French troops in those islands. He assured Mr Gillies he had recently visited nearly all the islands, and had made diligent inquiries relative to the reported outrages on French subjects by natives, but had failed to glean the slightest instantiation of the re« parti. Sailed, this morning, the Waihera for the Bluff. Adilaids, August 3. The Australian creditors in the Commercial Bank of South Australia will receive a dividend of 12s 6d ia the £ tomorrow. A meeting of the creditors «f Wilkin son and Co., wholesale grocers, was held yesterday. The liabilities amount to £92.26<J. Btdnet, AugH«t 11. A public meeting was held to-day to consider the question of holding an exhibition in celebration of the centenary of the colony. A series ot resolutions were proposed and adopted in favour of holding a ceatenial exhibition in Sydney in 1888.
