White Pine

As we said would probably be the case, the Government has refused to make , any reduction on the railway, tariff for white pine. The deputation of the Manawatu and Taranaki sawmillera waited en the' Minister fer Public Works en Thursday afternoon, The deputation was accompanied by Mr Macabthur, the member for Manawatu, and Mr Samuel, the member for New Plymouth. The Minister in reply said the rates had already been reduced twice on white pine without any increase in the traffic. Mr Maxwell, the General Manager of Bailways, was at the elbow el the Minister, and remarked that the present rates for white pine were less than for firewood. As he was opposed to any concession, it naturally followed that the -Minister said he did not see j his way to make any reduction without less to the public.
