Replying to questions, the Hon. Mr Laruach said that the Government had already made somo provision for the sufferers by tho volcanic eruptions, and iutendod further to put a moderate sum on the Estimates for that purpose. DUTY OX MACHINERY. Mr Moas moved, That it is desirable to impose Customs duties on all machinery now imported duty free, but which can be manufactured as well and as cheaply in the colony, care being taken to make a corresponding reduction in duties on articles not manufactured in New Zealand, in order that the total taxation may not be increased, — The Hon. Mr Stout would not oppose the motion, as it was re-eeohing the policy of the Government last session. — 'Mr Hatch supported the motion, but suggested thut " Machinery" be struck out, and "Article" bo substituted.— Mr J. C. Buckland moved tho previous question. — Messrs Sutter, Scobie MeKeuzie and Buchanan opposed the motion. — Colonel Trimble agreed that the tariff should be rerisod — not in the interest of protection — but of freedom. Any change in the tariff bhould be for the purpose of revenue alone. — Mr Fisher supported the motion, and Messrs Duncan and Turn bull opposed it. The debate was interrupted by the 5.30 adjournment.
