We have received a copy of the first issue of the Pahiatua Star — a bi-weekly journal published at the newly-formed settlement of Pahiatua. The paper is a very' creditable production indeed, being well printed, contains a large quantity of excellent reading matter, several well- writ ten editorials, and a good display of advertisements. The paper is conducted by our old friend, Vi r A. Black, formerly of the Patea Mail, and latterly of Palmer- ! ston North, and under his able management the future success of our new conj temporary is safely assured. When the House was in committee on the Municipal Corporations Bill, Sir Georgd Grey moved an amendment to provide that every person over 21 years of age should have a right to rote, at Borough elections. It is, almost needless to say this amendment was lost, by 72 to 11. From these figures we gather that there are eleven members In. the House who are not Borough ratepayers. The idea of flooding the rolls of Boroughs with non-ratepayers is simply against the teachiugs of common sense or justice. Sir George Grey might as well propose that " every person over. 21 yearB I ' should, vote for the elections of directors of public companies.
We regret to Irani that Mr Edwin Pawson— a son-in-law to Mr H- Holland —was badly hurt earl? on Monday morning, at Messrs Wratt and Hendersen's mill, Daoevirke. We are informed that he was struck with the falling limb of a tree and crushed to the gronnd. He was removed to the Waipukurau hospital where he now lies, On examination it was y found that the sufferer's head was cut across the forehead, making a wound which required three stitches to briug it together. . The shoulder blade and pelvis bone are fractured. We understand that he is doing well.
