Collapse of the Opposition
The catspaw put forward by the Op- ' positiou in the form of the amendment proposed by Mr Montgomery, which was accepted by the Government as a no-confidence motion, failed to drag the chestnuts from the fire. As we intimated would bo the case, tho Go- ! vernment secured a triumphant majority. We cannot help thinking, howover, that Mr Maoarthttr struck tho blot when he asked members not i to be afraid of the '« bogey dissolution" held up by the Government to terrify them. That this contingency was and is full of terrors to some members has now been placed beyond doubt. The country is to be congratulated on the victory gained, because members will now be able to settle down steadily to business. There is abundance of work for them to do, the nature and character of which is of the most vital importance to the future welfare of the colony. Although some of the supporters of the Ministry may be so from motives of fear rather than love, yet they are useful enough when the division bell calls them into the Government lobby.
