At the Theatre Royal on Saturday night, some person threw a bag of pepper at the money- taker at (he pit entrance. The bag struck the latter on the shoulder, but no pepper went into his fac». It is believed that the perpetrator intended to commit robbery. . An elderly woman, named McGregor, died suddenly lait night. She was found lying in the street, and expired shortly after removal. It has been discovered that owing to the envelopes tor the return of voting papers for -the election of a director on the Government Insurance Board haying been enclosed 'with damp papers fresh from the printers, a large proportion were i gummed down and rendered useless. Steps have been takes by the department to remedy the matter. At a meeting of the Otago members, twenty-three were present, the Premier being the only one absent. A resolution was carried "That the Otago Central line must be pushed on to- a payable point, namely— At least as far as Taieri Lake." Another resolution waß carried, " That no new line should be constructed until the Otago Central line has been' carried to a payable point." . " This Day. At a meeting of Auckland members held this morning, about fifteen being present, resolutions were passed to the .effeot, That the sum of £70,000 set down for the North of Auckland line is quite inadequate, considering ih»t it -'• a trunk line, and a comm 'tee of «*•« was ap pointed to wav upon the Government and endeavour to get the amount increased. An address from the residents of Tara- ■ naki to the Hon. John Bryoe, congratulating him on the success of the case, Bryre v Basden is to be presented to him this afternoon. Gisbornb, May 30. A County Counoil meeting was held yesterday to decide on the course to be taken to recover money detained by Willoughby Brassey, solicitor, who was recently dismissed from the Council* service. The amount is £155 pnid to him on May 10th, on account of rates Mr Brassey cashed the cheque on May 11th. On a demani being made for the money. Mr Brassey held it as alleged for his costs He gave a cheque, but said there Was not sufficient in the bank to meet it, as hi* clerk was away with the keys et his safe. The council decided that unless the money was paid by noon on Monday oriminal proceedings would be taken. ' Mabton, May 30.
Mrs Conchio, boardinghouse keeper, died very suddenly last night ; it is supposed from apoplexy.
