Yesterday a deputation from the executive council of the Education Board came to Palmerston: to investigate mattee« in connection with the 1 . te School Committee. The chairman. Mr Stewart, declined to allow the use of thr/ room, and the deputation returned to Wanganui last night without taking further action. Dunbdin; May 14 The compositors in the Daily Times office have gone out on strike. It is understood that they objected to the propesed reduction, and on the proprietors giving away on that point, the men re fused to work unless an sfgreeraent was signed that no reductions would be attempted during the next 12 months. - Gisborne, May 14. A man named * William Rowley was arrested to-day for attempting to murder a man named o*>eil. It appears that both men were working together, and that Rowley informed the police that O'Neil had shot himself. Subsequently ;■ suspicion fell on Rowley, and he war arrested. O'Neil was shot in the breast, the skull was split open, and he is in a precarious position. I Wellington, May 14. ! At the City Council this morning the Mayor, on behalf of the citizens of Wellington, presented Mr Bryce with an address of welcome, and congratulated him on the success of his action against Rusden. Mr Brjrce, in reply, expressed pleasure at the universal spirit of rejoicing that had welcomed his success. A luncheon' will be given to Mr Bryce on his return from Wanganui. This Day.
