The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, MAT 1, 1886.

The Defaulters List » At the special meeting ot the Borough Council, held after the ordinary meeting on Thursday night, for the purpose of hearing and determining any objections to theßurgesslist; there were no objectors in attendance. The roll was therefore certified to in the usual way. We were much struck with the number of names on the Defaulters list, about one hundred and twenty, containing the names of nearly all our leading and most wealthy citizens. For the most part default is made in non payment of the second instalment of the Loan Hate. There appears to be no excuse whatever for the defaulters, inasmuch as each one was supplied with a printed form, signed by the Town Clerk, making application for payment of the rate, with the words " final notice" written across the face. Whoever neglected to attend to this notice, did so at their own risk, and, therefore, have now to suffer the penalty of losing their privileges as burgesses of voting at any municipal election for twelve months after June Ist ensuing. As there are only three hundred and twenty six names on the roll altogether, so large a deduction from the number of electors is a most serious loss to the Borough, because after allowance is made for absentees, with burgesses who, from idleness or indifference, too often fail to poll their votes, the number of active burgesses left will prove remarkably small. The consequences which could result from this are easily to be foreseen. An active minority forcing on a passive majority measures which were antagonistic to the general welfare of the Borough. Such things have been chronicled ere now, and we see no reason to believe that the Borough of Feilding would prove an exception.
