Village Settlements
«, A matter of considerable interest to many of our readers was considered by^ the Land Board recently. The Chief' Commissioner (Mr Marchant) proposed that the Board should purchase land from Europeans and others i&v the purpose of forming village settlements under section 168 of the Land Act. In the couree of the discussion which ensued, Mr M'Cardle suggested that suitable blocks of land available for purchase should be visited by those members of the Board residing nearest to them. That gentleman, together with Messrs Beetham, Fitzherbert and Reese, warmly approved the proposal of the Chief Commissioner, and it was unanimously resolved that the latter should prepare a list of blocks of land which can be purchased by the Board. It was also decided, on the motion of Mr Reese, to acquire and set apart sections contiguous to roads, so as to encourage a desire for settlement amongst the men employed on the public thoroughfares. — Post.
