The Irish Question

THE LAND PURCHASE BILL. [BEUTEB's TELEGRAMS.] London, April 16. The Land Purchase Bill was introduced and read a first time to-day. The measure provides that the Irish Parliament snail appoint a State authority which shall purchase the lands, paying for them in bonds at par, bearing 3 per cent, interest ; the total amount issuable being £50,000,000 during three years. The sale price of the land is to be leased on twenty years' purchase, calculated on the judicious rental of the properties during the year 1885. Mansions and demesnes are not touched by the Bill. The expropriation is to be compulsory in congested districts, and optional elsewhere. Beceived April 20, 1 a.m. \ London. April 19. The Government land purchase scheme provides that the Imperial Receiver-General shall receive rents of purchased properties, and that the | same shall be a first charge on the Irish revenue.
