Riots in Melbourne
J.BEUTBB 8 TBLBGBAMS. I Melbottbkb, April 5. The Factory's Shops Act opposition is being followed up, and is continually increasing nightly disturbance in the Collingwood ana Fitzroy distrieti. by shop assistants and larrikins resenting the keeping open of those shops which, in accordance with the Municipal by«law* are exempted from the previsions of the Aot. The rioters assembled on Friday and Saturday nights, getting together a large crewd, and paraded the street in the suburbs named, smashing the windows of obnoxious tradesmen, and generally Debating in a riotous manner. The police were greatly out« numbered, and were powerless to pwrent lns outrages. A recurrence of the disturbance is feared to-night. Precaution i have accordingly been takes, by the authorities. ' Received April 6, 1 a.m. Mblbocbnb, April 5. A large crowd collected in Colliagwoed this evening, but no breach of the peace occurred. At the time of telegraphing (10.30 p.m.) everything was quiet.
