Drs Earle, Tripe, and Connolly were present, and the whole operation was got through with despatch and success, as the littlo patient is making a splendid recovery so far. The New Zealand Protective Association (Chmtchurch) have submitted the following qnestions to the Trades' and Labor Council Melbourne requesting them to make all necessary enquiries from agricultural associations and get direct answers : - 1. Has tfee protective policy of Victoria been approved of by the farmers and other producers p 2. Is there any likelihood of the farming corn* munity returning to a freetrade policy ? 3. The circumstances connected with his last-known actions would seem to indicate an unsettled mind. When m Melbourne recently he was under Dr Fitzgerald, who stated that Mr Holt was • feffonng from brain disease. The deficiency due by Mr Holt to the Bank of New Zealand is stated to be about £11,000, which will be covered by his private estate. His total liabilities are estimated at £35,000. One of the absurdities of the present railway tariff was brought forcibly under our notice yesterday. A farmer here, Mr Simpson, on Lee's lino, had arranged the sale of a quantity of grain to be delivered at Fordell station. On making enquiry at the station here as to the charges', he was informed that the charge to Fordell would be 9s 7d per ton, but if he sent it to Wanganui — 12 miles further on — the charge would be only 8s 9d per ton. As the quantity of grain to be forwarded amounted to upwards of 20 tons, the loss would be a consideration. Now every one must admit that it is a hard nut to crack for an average farmer why it should cost more to carry grain 39 than 51 miles. Even the talented Mr Maxwell might puzzle over this.
