A shocking occurrence took place a< the Thames a week ago which has nol been telegraphed. It appears, from a report furnished to the New Zealand Herald of Monday, that the residence ol Mr Richard Richards, adjoining hit boardinghouse, Earangahake, was burned down on Saturday afternoon, two boys, 4J and 3 years, losing their lives in the burning building. Mrs Richards had washed them and locked them in while she went to tbe store. It is surmised they found matches in her absence, and, playing with them, set fire to the place. The Herald in commenting on the sad event, says:— At Whangarei a similar tatal accident recently occurred, while at Waikato, a mother was bereft of the whole of her children at one fell swoop. The moral is not far to seek, and parents incur a serious responsibility in learing children of tender years m wooden buildings alone without proper guardianship.
