With reference t* the information published from London that a strong syndicate had undertaken the construe* tian of the railway from Nelson to Springfield, the Government have cabled to the Agent-General for particulars. The writ issued by Mr S. S. Downes, of the Pier Hotel, against Sir William Fox for libel, was served to-day. The damages claimed are £5000 and the case will probably be heard at the ensiling sittings of the Supreme Court.
This Day. No further telegrams hav^ bein receivod with reference to the construction of the Nelson Springfield railway. Government haye for some time been in communication with the Agent-General and a syndicate on this subject,, and it is considered probable the whole, question will be discussed at a meeting of the Cabinet this afternoon. Aucklanp, March 24. At the inquest on the body of Elizabeth Grace Vassey, an open verdict of found drowned was returned. At th» inquest on the man Slator, found dr»wned at Riverhead, s verdict of committed suicide while in a state of temporary insanity was returned.
