[per united press association.] Wanoanui, March 1. The eighth prize meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association commenced at Aramoho this morning. The range is pleasantly situated, about 3£ miles from town, on Mr Walker's property, and is approachable .either bj road or river. The number of competitors it 211, about half, of whom caze*eanped at the range, the remainder" being billeted in town. The range, ien an excellent one, and the general opinion of those competing is that iHs superior to those at Auckland, Wellington, or Dunedin. • -v Major Noake is in charge of the range, assisted by Majors Lockett, Neill, and Lieutenant Borlase. At a parade of the competitors^Major Noake addressed the men on the position, of the Association, which, he said, was being worked on an entirely different basis from the previous years, and although the duties of the Wen would be light, strict military discipline would be observed, and the hearty cooperation of all was requested, and if . given, the success of the meeting would be assured. So far as he was able to ascertain, the arrangement*, made by the present controlling body * left little to be desired. . .-- Shortly after 10 o'clock the Wellington match, 400 and 500 yards was commenced and will :be completed later this afternoon. / : The weather has remained fine all the morning, but there was -a fresh north west wind blowing accross the range, which to some extent.interf ered with the shooting. All the sights were tested, and those not in accord*' ance with the regulations were altered, and this is said to hare put off some; of the competitors. > At the adjournment for lunch the! 200 yards for the Wellington, match was completed. At a meeting of the Executive Council ef the Rifle Association this morning, a protest was lodged against the scot* of Purnell, Mooseman,. and others, on I " the grounds that they fired with long sniders, which it was alleged it was alleged are far superior to rifles to those used by other competitors. Toe question was further adjourned until this afternoon. The weather is fine, with a light wind blowing across the range. The Hawjie-'s Bay match for rifle and carbine belts,- 200 and 500 yards, was commenced ■ this . morning, and the shooting is. better than yesterday- the first range will finish or about noon. .
