% : — ■ ■■ -• •• [PBB UNITED PBESS JISSOCIXTIOK.] Auckland, February 26. Sir George Grey addressed the electors of City East and the citizens of Auckland this evening at the Theatre Royal. Then : was a crowded audience, and the Mayer presided. He commenced by saying that an important crisis had arises in cb« affairs of the celony, and he shrank from the task of addressing them. He pro* posed to remedy the present distress by opening np of a lot of land for settlement by the people, also by purchasing estate! at the property valuation and a perceut* age added, as well as by purchasing th« best of the native lands on fair terms for . the purpose. He was in favour of the abolition of Government-assisted immigration in every shape and form, in future the imposition of a land and income tax, ■ and the abolition of plural voting.- With regard to the Government Insurance Department, he thought it a misfortune. . that Parliament had yielded its control/ and endeavours should be made to get it restored.
