A Retrospect
Occasionally it is serviceable in a prosperous community to make a retrospective survey of those landmarks of advancement ; new, or comparatively new buildings, and with this view the following notes are made : — Perhaps the best house that has been erected is that of Mr J. Prior, built upon a beautiful site overlooking the Oroua river. The design for this was prepared by the late Mr E. H Wright and its carrying out was intrusted to Mr W. D. Nicholas. A lengthy account of the work appeared in our columns at the time of its erection, we refrain from further noticing it now. Other dwellings have been put up for Mr Boots, Mr L. CaldweU. MrTrain, and ether gentlemen, all of which lire out of the ordinary type of colonial houses That of Mr Train's is, however, worthy of notice as being novel in its color (a pale green). There are many who advocate that houses in a sunny climate, like that of New Zealand, should be painted delicate tints, and we think Mr Train's experiment is perhaps in favor of the argument, supposing that the roof were of some warm, decided color. But we feelthat a corrugated iron roof in close conjunction with these pale' tinted wall* would spoil any effect that may be aimed at. " .■'-".. Hill) has been built upon the site of Mr Drummond's office (which was burned dowa in November, 188*2). Messrs Halcombe and Sherwill's office and saleroom, from the designs of Messrs Atkins and dere, of Wauganui, have tilled in another of£the blanks in the Kimbolton road. .^ Of buildings set apart for religious .. purposes three have been erected, one for the use of the Salvation Army, one d as a Gospel Hall, in Warwick street, and a Sunday School Room, from the designs of the Diocesan architects, Messrs Atkins and Clere, in connection with St. John's Church. The buildings put up in the country adjacent to Feilding are too numerous to mention. Messrs Pope and Pearson we understand are building a good sized residence for Mr Williamson in the Kiwitea, while Mr F. ■Berry is doing a similar work for Messrs Godfrey and Oldershaw, this last being from the designs of Messrs Atkins and dere. Other buildings for private residences are now contemplated, which will be duly noted as they take practical forou
