As the little steamer Elsie was on her way from Motueka to Kelson, and when aboit serenmiUs off the land, Captain Johnston noticed a boat bottom up, and a man yelling at the top of his mice. On making for the boat it was found to be Mr Deck, of Motueka, w!io stated that he had been in that position for 16 hours during which he had drifted fire miles. Mr Deck was got on board with difficulty. Wkllingtox, February 22. A, man named Mullan has been sentenced to a month's imprisonment and to find sureties to keep the peace for six. months, for striking the editor of a local paper a riolent blow in the face as he was walking along the street reading a paper. Defendant pleaded that the paper had commented on the Parnell party, but was really instigated by a third party who has a grierance against the paper. Cardinal Moran and the Bishops of Adelaide. Maitland, Dunedin, Auckland, and Wellington were guests of his Excellency the Governor at lunch to-day. A man named Cornelius , Todd was charged with breaking into Mr Cpgnn's tailor shop and stealing certain wearing apparel, and was committed for trial. Invebcargill, February 22. At the Police Court to«day a baker named Kenneth McKinnon was sentenced to two months' hard labour for haring, while drunk, assaulted an old gentleman at the railway station. Thos. Spence, aged 18 years, was, committed for trial for a criminal assault on « lan Butler, a girl 11 years and four months old. Chhistchurch. February 22. This morning the Mayor, on behalf of the leading inhabitants of Canterbury, presented Mr Back, traffic manager of the railways, who is tearing for Tasmania, with a cheque for £300. In replying to the toast of his health, Mr Back expressed the opinion that within ten years, under careful management, the railways of New Zealand would be the best paying railways in the world. Wangajtui, This Day. The body ef the boy Fish, drowned on Thursday, was recorered to-day. The Education Beard passed a resolution asking the Government to advance LIOOO of next year's building grant to enable them to meet the demand for new schools in the outlying districts.
