40,000 UNEMPLOYED IN HYDE PAEK. RELIEF WORKS CONDEMNED. [bEUTEB.s' TELEGBAMB.I London, February 21. A mass meeting of unemployed was held in Hyde Park to-day, under the auspices of the Socialist organisation. There was au enormous attendance, fully forty thousand persons being present. Speeches were made condemning the proposal to establish relief works for the unemployed. Burnes, the leading Socialist, against whom proceedings have been taken in connection with the late disturbances, j in the course of his speech predicted that bloodshed would ensue, unless ■ the social reforms asked for were granted. There was a strong force of police on the ground and in the neighborhood, but their services were not called into requisition, as the assemblage dispersed in an orderly manner.
Received February 20, 2 p.m. London, February 23. , The Committee which was appointed under the chairmanship of Mr Childers, to make enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the recent riots in the West End, has sent in a report urging that full enquiry be made into the management of the Metropolitan Police Force. In consequence of this report, Sir Edimund Henderson K.C.B. commissioner of police J has tendered his resignation of that office.
