Manchester Rifles
♦ On Saturday last the committee of the Feilding Brass Band (which is also the band of the corps) sent a challenge to the captain of the corps couched in the following terms : — Sir, — The committee ol the hand has' authorised me to challenge the members of the corps to a rifle match to be held on Saturday, the 13th irist., at 2*30 p.m. The losers to buy a pair of cymbals. The distances tobe 2oo, 300, and 500 yards, seven shots each range. — I am &0., B. J. Gosling, Secretary. The following is a list of the Hand team:-— S. Daw, B. J. Gtosling, f W. Stevens, T. Brooker, E. Cockery, W. Poad, and R. Reid. It goes without saying that 'this challenge was immediately accepted, and the following members will represent the corps: — D. H. Macarthur, Captain, Lie tits Blackmore and Pleasants, Sergt. Evans, Corj • Humphries, Roe, and Fowles, W. Chamberlain emergency man. "What the Manchester Rifles are to do with the cymbals—if they win them — is not very clear, but at a last resource they can make a presentation of them to the band, and so remove that difficulty. On Sunday evening the Rifles, attended by the band, assembled for church parade. There was a very \ good muster. They were marched to \\. St. John's Church under the oomnttnd of Captain Macarthur. The 4 congregation on that occasion was very large and the seats were all comfortably filled. At the conclusion of the service the men were marched to Manchester Square, where, before they were dismissed, Lieut. Blackmore informed * them that if the attendance .at Toesday night parades was better,, the company would be marohed out*— headed by the' band — as by that means they would learn cadence in marching far better than by merely drilling in the paddock. The men were then dismissed to theirxes^otive homes. ..-•. ■•■'.- : .• :
