Another Railway Accident in Wellington
. .» [pee vhited pbess association.] Wellington, Febrmary 8. Another accident has occurred on the Wellington-Masterton railway. On Saturday afternoon a passenger train was being passed up the steep incline on the Featherston side of the Rirnutaka, and had i"ust passed through a tunnel, when the gripping apparatus of the engine gave way and the train began to run down hill. The brakes were applied, and fortunately held the train, bringing up in the tunnel. The lady passengers became greatly excited, several fainting and screaming — the darkness adding to their fright. Most ofthe passengers jumped out, some sustaining slight injuries. If the train had moved after the passengers jumped out, some of them would have been crushed to death.
