Eeferring to the Irish difficulty, Mr Gladstone, in his address to the electof Midlothian, states that her Majesty's Government hope to introduce some scheme, which shall promise more stability, than is secured by the present law for the repression of crime. He adds that while deeply conscious of the responsibility resting upon them, they are comforted by the belief that they are engaged on a work of peace. The Earl of Aberdeen has teen appointed Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland. Lord Wolverton assumes the portfolio of Postmaster - General ; Sir Lyon Playfair, Vice President of the Committee of the Council on Education ; Earl Morely, Commissioner of Works; Mr John Eigby, Q.C., Solicitor-Gen-eral; and Mr James Bryce, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs. Received February 9, 1 a.m. . London, February 8. Sir John Farrer Herschell, Lord Chancellor in the new administration, assumes the title of Baron Herachell on his elevation to the Upper House. Mr T. Heneage has been appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster; Mr Osborne Morgan, Under-Secretary for the Colonies ; Sir M. Pay Shuttleworth, Under-Seoretary for India; Mr Broadhurst, Under-Secretaryfof Home j Affairs; Mr Herbert Gladstone, Financial Secretary of the War Office.
