Dr. Gilbert
On Thursday night Dr Gilbert gave a free lecture in the Foresters' Hall. The room was packed, while the passages and lobbies were also crowded. The lecture was instructive and amusing. At its conclusion a number of old and young people of both sexoß had their characters read most accurately, if one may judge by the unanimous endorsement given to each portrayal by the audience, who were for the most part well acquainted with each individual. The capacity of the Foresters' Hall was last night tried to its utmost to contain the large audience which flocked to hear this talented speaker. The subject was " Love, Courtship, and Marriage." For upwards of an hour and a half the interest of his hearers was enchained, and at no time was there the slightest mark of impatienoe, while the 1 applause was frequent and well deserved. Much laughter was evoked by the frequent sallies of dry American humour, and quaint stories interpersed throughout the lecture. We have seldom heard a speaker from a lecturer's platform teach so ably, and in such terse, vigorous English, the true principles of honorable manhood. What he would inculcate in youth is industry, truth, and respect for women m all stations ok conditions of life. This is sonnd practical moral teaching, and if it made its proper impression on the young men amongst his hearers last night, much good is certain to result. We regret that the limited space at our disposal prevents us giving a more lengthy notice.
