Trout for the Oroua River
• -•- When Messrs Sherwill, Bailey, Bray and Beattie were on their return journey from Wellington where they had driven in Mr Daw's buggy, to attend the sitting of the Supreme Court, they visited the fish ponds of Wellington and Wairarapa Acclimatisation Society at Masterton. As there were some young fish ready to be brought over for liberation in our streams, this excellent opportunity of so doing, was taken advantage of. About 1600 were put in canvass buckets and packed in the trap. All wot woll until during the middle of the day, when several began to show signs that the heat was too much for them. At every stream the travellers came to, fresh water was supplied, but notwithstanding this aud the care taken, a n umber died. Bather than lose the whole, that vessel which contained the greatest quantity was discharged into the Momahaki, about a mile on this side of the Ekatahuna. Here entirely fresli water tvas taken in for the second vessel, and the fish were brought on to the Oroua where they were sent adrift all alive and active.
