THE LATEST AMERICAN INVEN- " TION. r rHE VICTORY of ELECTRICITY. I — Since Electricity has been applied . for lighting purposes, all effortff of investors have been directed to construct a . lamp for general : domestic use. The reason why this problem lias till now 1 not been solved, is' that none of the inventors could rid themselves of the •idea of .gasr lighting and-ihat all have adhered to the system of producing the Klectricitj iii some central place, or by large machinery, instead of first laying ; down the principal that a Lamp popular, I must be portable, like an Oil Lamp, and ] contain the generator of {Electricity in itself, i. c., in the foot of the Lamp. : The Norman Electric Light C». has at last succeeded in completely realizing tikis ideal of Electric Lightning, and there is no doubt that this most important invention will bring about a complete. reylution in all branches of lighting. > Our Electrio Lamp needs neither Machinery, Conductors, nor any expensive outlay, «nd is neither complicated, nor 'disagreeable in manipulation ; all that is necessary is to refill it every four or five days with acid. The cost of lighting will be as cheap a* gas (f cents per hour), and it has before the latter the immense advantage of neither producing hpat; smoke nor, carbonic ac.id, owing tp which the air is not impured, siid. remains the same degree of temperature. It is further, absolutely inodorous, and does not need to be kindled by match, or otherwise, but_ ■ simply by turning the key» thus avoiding, all danger of fire, explosion or suffocation^ as in the case ot gas, if the key is lefti open ; and it must be conceded that this; advantage alone is invaluable* It is. further preferable tp any known, kind of, lighting for the following' reasons :— - ' < (1.); Its manipulation is so simple thatj any child can keep it in order. (2.) That the Lamp is portable, and can; be removed like an Oil Lamp, from one: place to another. . (?.) That it neither, requires the dis-i agreeable fixing of the wick, or the clean -j ing of the cylinder, as in. the case of OiJ Lamps. (4.) That the light produced is a soft and most steady one ;that it never flick: ers.and the-flame, though being, equal in in power of lighting to gas, can be regu-* lated toany degree. \ (5.) That every danger oj fire is abso\ lutely excluded, as the light will extinguish immediately, if by any accident the glas? surrounding the burner should be broken. (6.) That it will burn even m the strong^ estwind, completely unaffected, thus beind invaluable for illuminations, lighting oj gardens, corridors, &c. : This Lamp is constructed for the pre-f sent in three different sizes . — A.
