"Ah," he said, "how singularly appropriate that old Trench proverb is to the circumstance !" " Which one ?" said, I ! Why, — and it isjso true, too — Cc rCest que le premier pas gui Kooti ! That was the way he pronounced it! Why he was very near a good joke ! Yes, sonny, about as near as the man who purchased some leggings in an alley and called them his crocodiles ! What do lie mean ? Well, he tried to fire off a big joke on alligators, but it was a failure !
