New Year's Day
Yesterday morning opened cloudy and tie promise of rain was fulfilled by the refreshing showers which' fell in the forenoon. The weather did mot exercise any deterent effect on pleasure seekers for the town wag almost deserted by the. residents, who on pleasure, bent had departed by traim, on horseback, and every kind of wheeled vehicle. The Palmerston Sports took away a fair proportion, and a number went on the same errand to Halcoinbe. The Marton-Eangitikei Eaces at Bulls were largely patronised, and to-day we observed a number of persons starting for that race course to witness the second day's programme. On New Tear's Eve there was a display of fireworks, and the^ Feilding Brass Band played the Old Year out and the New Year in in the old legitimate manner. There was very little firing of guns or other nonsense of the kind; but a little practical joking of a feeble and inane character was played, The Halcombe Sports were well attended, about four hundred being present. Visitors were present from the surrounding farms and settlements, and the programme was got through satisfactory. Our local athletes did well* most of the prize money coming to Feilding.
