The Cook Strait Cable

(PEB CNITEn PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, December 22. The portion of the original Cook Strait cable where the break occurred, has been cut out and brought to WeUington. Only I for a few feet does the cable show any sign of deterioration, although it has been submerged some 18£ years. The portion actually broken through appears to have been resting on a sharp ledge of rock, and to have been subjected to chemical action, probably that of copper, which has corroded and eaten through the iron and other materials forming the cable. In repairing the break tho steamer was able to save several fathoms of cable by taking in some of the slack, which resulted from its having been originally laid down by a sailing vessel.
