Foilding Jockey Club
A public meeting in connection with the above Club was held at the Town Hall on Tuesday evening last, Mr D. H. Macarthur, M.H.R., occupying the chair. The meeting was very well attended. The chairman, in opening the proceedings, stated the stewards had had : * great difficulty and trouble in making up the deficiency left from the last race meeting, and notwithstanding *•' their exertions there was still a deficit of £28 lis 8d to pay off. He also complained of the illiberal and poor v support accorded the Club by the public. If it was decided to hold a "-p- race meeting this year it would be ~ * Accessary to' pay off the deficit and .•i elect a new secretary, as Mr A. Fitz*"*herbert had not the time (through his. residing out of town) to attend to the duties of- the office. The chairman - concluded byimpressing on the meeting the urgent need of prompt and liberal support being accorded the Club by the general public. Mr Gosling*, sen., asked if the Club would he allowed the use of the course this year? Mr ; F'. V, Lethbridge replied in the affirmative'; : Mr Gosling further remarked that it would "be a matter for regret if the race meeting fell through. He thought the town hm^iiot been well canvassed for subscriptions, *&nd stated that he himself h_ff*hot 'Been asked for a subr ' acription. He suggested winding up the old Club and forming a new one, with' more life and energy infused into it. The chairman replied to the last speaker, and informed him that the town had been thoroughly canvassed ior subscriptions by Mr P. Bartholomew and others. There was ho need of forming a new Olub, as the old one was in existence ; and as to infusing new life into it, what the Club wanted was liberal and actual, and not promised, support. There had been too many promises and too few payments made to the Club. After some discussion as to whether Palmerston intended holding a race meeting on Monday, it was Resolved, on the motion of Mr F. Y. Lethbridge, seconded by Mr Gurny, That the Feildiug Jockey Club hold its annual meeting on next Easter Monday. Mr H. L. Sherwill proposed and Mr A. Fitzherbert seconded, That Mr Franklin be appointed secretary of the Peilding Jockey Club.— Carried.' It was further resolved, on the motion of Mr Gosling, sen., seconded by Mr Morphy, That the secretary canvass the town for subscriptions and new members.' The chairman here suggested that as the three local publicans were present thoy should head the subscription list with a good donation each. Mr J. Hastie promised a subscription of £10, provided the other publicans did the same. If they did not give- a similar amount he would subscribe £5 only. Mr F. Boe and Mr E. Beilve each promised a donation of £5. The chairman expressed dissatisfaction with the smallness of the two last subscriptions. He certainly expected the two latter gentlemen (seeing the benefit' thej derived from race meetings) would have subscribed more liberally. He himself came prepared to give. a £5 donation, but the two last subscriptions had disappointed Mm, aad he therefore declined to give anything whatever. Mr Morphy- made some reference to canvassing for subscriptions, but his remarkß Were iaaudible. ' On the motion of Mr A. Fitzherbert, -seconded by Mr F. Y. Lethbridge, a inotubera' list was started in the room, .-when shout 25 names were taken down by the secretary. After some further discussion it was -resolved, That the meeting adjourn -till the 2nd Saturday* in January, when lhe new secretary' would report progress ia the matter of subscriptions, and; 'if decided upon, a programme drawn up for the ensuing race; meeting j AL vote bf- thanks '"' to 'the chairnian terminated the prooSedmgs.
