GENERAL SUMMARY.
Auckland, November 22. The Ber. T. W. Morrill, of Si Albans, who was recently reported to have gone to Borne, appears to be living in retirement on the income | from £30,000 left him three years ago by Miss Marx, one of his parishioners. Her surviving relations propose to contest the bequest on the ground of undue influence. The special staff of Irish constables Organised in London early during the dynamite scare have been ordered back to Ireland, as their serviftaj^are no longer needed. A despatch from London of November 21 says that a terrible cyclone swept over the Phillippine Islands, the day before. It is reported that 6000 buildings, including numerous churches and sohoolhouses, were destroyed or damaged, and 22 persons killed. " A despatch to the Times from Calcutta on November 22 says that 5000 people have been drowned and 150 submerged in Orissa by a cyclone, and 1241 square miles devastated. A free fight occurred at a political meeting held by the Conservatives at Burton, on November 14, in which Mr Charles AHsop, M.P., who presided, was beaten almost out of recognition. London papers of the 18th November mention the elopement of a beautiful heiress yet in ncr teens, a ward in Chancery, and under guardianship of the Hon. Gathorne Hardy, with the latter's steward, a man named Anderson. The lady's name is Bidgway, Anderson, in order to evade the severe penalty of the law against abducting or eloping with a ward in chancery, caused Miss Hidgway to bind herself to him as a domestic servant. The case of Adams v. Lord Chief Justice Coleridge came up on November 10th in the Queen's Bench. Division j but Sir Henry James begged the Court to allow an adjournment, on the plea of an understanding arrived at outside the Court. It was then learned that Mr Adams is to receive a large sum for damages and costs. The suit was brought by him on account of a libellous letter written by the Hon Bernard Coleridge, but inspired by the Lord Chief Justice himself. The depression which has existed for some time in the shipbuilding trade on the Clyde is increasing in severity. There, are so many men out of employment that the Belief Committee find great difficulty even in supplying food, for the distressed people. Owing to recent civilian attacks a large party of the King's Boyal Bifles broke out of Limerick barracks in the night of November 10, and make an indiscriminate attack upon people residing in the vicinity. Several were badly stabbed. The soldiers were conveyed back to the barracks by the police. While a man named Michael Nargent was proceeding to Ballymahon on the 10th to record his vote adverse to the Nationalist party he was dragged from his car and beatennearly to death. Boger O'Brien, a prominent leaguer, was shot at Athfone the same day on account of agrarian trouble. ▲ large crowd *f factory jgirls mobbed Mr Charles Edward Lewis, Conservative member of Parliament, at Londonderry, on November 12. They treated him in a most rhamefal manner. At (?arrick>on>Suir November 14, a mob of 2000 person* armed with pitchforks and scythes, expelled the pelice, who were trying, to serve writs of ejectment. ' Senator Sharon, the California millionaire, is dead. He left lOO.OOOdoIs to charities. He made a solemn affidavit ob his deathbed that marital relations never existed between himself and Sarah Athlea Hill, plaintiff in the celebrated case against him. Jehn Bowman, ex- Mayor of 8t Lonis, was assassinated within a few feet of his own deor, it is believed by a political opooneat. The Free Trade Conference at Chicago was largely attended. Mr Beeeher denounced Protection as a jugglery of the devil. Mr Boirignes, whe accompanied M. de Lesseps to Panama, has published a book in New York with damaging criticisms regarding the canal. He declares that the scheme has already sunk 20,000,000 sterling and is doomed to inevitable failure.
