The following ; letter has heen for- - warded to iis for publication :— A" ' D. H. Macarthur, Esq., Feilding. * Sir, — To-day I tested one of the pieces of stone sent me . by' Mr Bartholomew, about, the weights of^f our ounces, the result being almost ; half a grain of gold and silver mixed. - Tha stone never left Mr Aitkeu's hands till it was placed in the furnaoe, and ha was present during the whole .time the stone was being operated on. He possesses the metal, and he infonna me he is going to send it to Feilding, with all particulars. I .was una-ble to get sufficient heat in the. furnace to gather all the metal into one. piece, and had there been more -heat the result would have been better. 1 - But as I am having a large furnace' built, the next te_ts will he more satisfactory. The cplor of the stone was a dark brown or chocolate, and showed only one spec of metal previous to being tested. . The result: would be about seven aud a half ouncesrta the ton. You know where the stone came from, and if you send up a prospector I would suggest that he examine the place well. I have sent you this information as you wished, and will ho glad to furnish you .with any detail* you may desire, manner of treatment, or any other partioulars. .;.- I have got some of the same atone, left still, andintend to test the remaining jportion of it. If at any time you desire any specimens tested, I shall be glad tb undertake it for you, in the presence of yourself or any gentlenmn you ihay mention.— Tours, &c., ■John Forbes. Wanganui, Nov. 18', 1885. .. . . [We have 'seen the metal mentioned in the letter, and are satisfied that it contains gold and silver, as stated I by Mr Forbes.— En. F.B.] p— *— —■ — ....
