Honesty!

The Hon. Mr Stout is reported to have said in his recent speech at Dunedin: — "We didn't need any loan; we had got authority to raise one million for the North Island Trunk Railway, and, of course, if we are hard up for money, the money is there. It will be very hard for the North Island people if the money for their Trunk railway is taken for general purposes, but we caa't help that." Mr Stout appears to have spoken as a Southern member who was desirous of gaining the good-will of his constituents by advocating a policy of spoliation of the North, for the benefit of those whom he represents, rather than as a Minister of the Crown who has to administer for the colony at large. The honorable gentleman will probaI bly deny that he has been correctly reported. We hope that he will do so, and at the game time satisfy the colony that the Stout- Voqel Ministry will not follow in the lines laid down by the Premier.
