Tragic Incidents at Sea
The Orient Company's Liguria, which arrived at Plymouth from Australia, a few days since, reports that just after she had passed through the Indian Ocean one of her firemen came up from the stokehole, slipped his shoes off, and jumped overboard. A number of passengers witnessed the occurence, and the vessel, which was steaming at the rate of fourteen knots an hour, was promptly stopped and boats lowered, but the poor fellow had «.unk almost immediately, and nothing of him was seen. The he it was intense at the time, and it is supposed that this had affected his mind and induced him to commit suicide. Another fireman was set to do his work, and the following day this man fell between the boilers, and although he struggled hard to get out, he was literally roasted alive. His remains were recovered and buried at sea. — Anglo-New Zealander.
