State Schools
The "Wanganui Chronicle, in an article dealing with the poor results of certain schools at the recent examinations, says : — The Makino Road and Matarawa schools were also considered very unsatisfactory, but, in deference to the expressed wishes of ,the respective committees, a further opportunity is to be given the teachers of retrieving their positions. We come now to the two schools the masters of which were notified that the board would expect better results next year. Feilding has 282 scholars, the number examined being 173, and the passes 82 ; Bulls, 190, with 57 passes out of 110 examined. These results do not seem to I us at all satisfactory, especially in large schools, where the masters have bad charge for some years. Percentage of passes of those examined, ranging from 9 in the Biverton School up to 51 in the Bulls School, cannot be considered good enough, when it is remembered that numbers of schools in the district, not a bit better in producing good results than those above mentioned, have ayeraged from 70 up to 100 per cent, in this year's standard examinations. "We feel quite sure that the Edncation Board have no wish to be unduly harsh upon teachers, but they would be criminally neglectful of a positive duty if they were to permit returns such as we have mentioned above, to pass without taking notice of them in a public and unmistakeable manner.
