Manchester Rifles

The members of the Manchester Rifles opened the firing season on Saturday by a match between two teams chosen from the married and single members of the corps. The following shows the results : — Married. Pts Single. Pfcs Lieut Blackmore 48 Vol Anderson 25 Lieut Pleasants 42 Vol Corkery 1 1 Sorgt Ashworth 37 Vol Halcombe 34 Corpl Humphries 59 Vol Poad 60 Vol Patterson 32 Vol Gosling 25 Vol Flowers 26 Vol Oowan 33 Vol Smith 18 VolTurner 37 Vol G. Robinson 9 Vol H. Worsfold 39 Vol E. Worsfold 4 Total 262 Total 277 As the match was arranged to be decided by the average score of each man. the married men won, their average being 37.3-7 as against 27.7-10 of the single men. When it is remembered that few of the single men have ever fired from a rifle before, the shooting is very good. We have observed that it is an invariable rule ' where a recruit makes his first essay at the targets by a bad score, he improves in his shooting day after day, whereas if he makes a brilliant score at first, he seldom or never retains the reputation he suddenly earns. Judging from the scores above, we are disposed to think that the Manchester Rifles will be able to take a good position in the matches which usually takes place during the season. But to do this they must practice diligently and carefully.
