The Caulfield Cup will be run on Saturday next. Captain Edvrin telegraphs to-day: — Warnings for gales and rain hare been sent to all stations. A splendid set of second hand buggy harness is advertised to-day by Mr Henry. We recommend buyers to make an early inspection as this is an opportunity seldom offered. Mr Svendscn has just opened out a large selection of boots and shoes for the summer season and are well worthy of the inspection of our readers. Special cables state that hops an.* likely to rise in price, and that is probable that higher prices will rule for wheat by the end of the year. The Feilding Brass Band played a selection of music on the Square on Saturday night with their usual skill and effect. We understand that Messrs Sherwill, Fry, Macarthur, and Lethbndge have resigned their Commissions of the Peace. The reasons for this stop have not been made public. An information has been laid against a well-known farmer near Feilding for creating a disturbance at Mrs Moore's lecture on Sunday night. The case will be heard at tke R.M. Court to-morrow, and promises to be unusually interesting. Mr Retemeyer has taken the house and land the property of Mr Price, on the Awahuii road. We understand that Mr Retemeyer will go on to the Small Farm Association Block as soon as ever the sections are allotted-. On Saturday .afternoon a greyhound walked calmly into a butchers shop on Kimbolton road, and after careful examination of the pieces of meat exposed for sale, selected a f ore-cmarter of lamb which, holding daintily in its mouth, took to its kennel not many chains away. This was all very well for the dog but awkward for the butcher. A new advertisement with reference to Mr W. Reading's stationery, book, and fancy goods emporium appears elsewhere. We notice that he is establishing a circulating library which will supply a want felt in the district, as persons having books they have no longer any use for will be afforded a medium of transferring thorn to other handstand replacing them by .new orjte§.
Mr Haybittle has just received some beautiful specimens ef floral ornaments.
The stationmastor, Mr Roche, is to be complimented on the manner in which he carried out his duties yesterday. He was most courteous to the public, and carried out the arrangements at the platform most efficiently.
To-day Mr T. R. Walton, of Edinburgh House, Palmerston, informs the public of Feilding that owing to the insufficiency of accommodation in his premises in Palmerston he will offer a large assortment of English goods, consisting of special lines of drapery, ex Doric, Tongariro, and Arawa. Mr Walton has taken those premises in Kimbolton road next Mr Daw's stables.
The funeral of the late wife of Mr Summers took place on Sunday last. There was a large attendance of persons, representing all classes of the community. The Foresters marched in their regalia, Mr Summers feeing a member of that body. There were several brakes, traps, vehicles, as well as a large number of horsemen in the funeral cortege, the length of which showed how much the deceased lady was esteemed, and how deeply every resident in the district sympathised with the bereaved husband. The Rev. Joshua Jones officiated at the grave.
One of Mr S. Daw]s horses had a narrow escape this morning from serious injury. Seeing its stable companions being driven along Fergusson street, it attempted to jump the fence of the paddock where it was grazing. The jumping power proved insufficient so it lodged on the top rail, its fore feet touching the ground and its hind quarters in mid air. Nothing discomposed it commenced to graze and continued to do so until Mr Worsfold cut it clear with an axe.
