The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1885. The Governor

The visit of the Governor to Feilding is an event which will long be remembered. It is well-known that the honor was spontaneous on his part, and was therefore all the more highly appreciated. His reception must have been most gratifying to him, even accustomed as he is to ovations of a similar kind. The feeling of the people seemed to be one of loyalty to Her Majesty whom he represents, and of personal respect to His Excellency, who had extended to them an unexpected courtesy. The whole character of the reception was an evidence of its spontaniety. The Borough Council only learned on Thursday evening of the projected visit. On Friday morning a telegram was sent acknowledging receipt of the message from the Governor's Private Secretary, at the same time asking the latter to mention the hour when the ViceRoyal party might be expected. The reply to this message was only received at about 11 a.m. on Monday, so that very little time was allowed for preparation. However a Reception Committee had already been appointed, and they did what was possible, in a manner which reflects infinite credit upon them. On Sunday, messages were sent out into the country to give notice to the outsettlers of the proposed fete, but the bad weather which prevailed on the morning of yesterday, prevented a great number from leaving their homes in the bush. Others, however, were not deterred by the weather, and rode in to help to swell the multitude assembled to meet an honored guest. As a loyal people the settlers on the Manchester Block stand second to none in the colony, but we hold that this visit of Sir William Jervois will do much to intensify the feeling, not only to Her Majesty, but to himself personally, and as Governor of the colony. Should he again honor Feilding with his presence, we may give him a more elaborate, but it would be impossible for us to give him a warmer welcome than he received yesterday.
