Bogus Reefs and Telegrams
Ok Thursday last a telegram was sent from the Press Association in Wellington as follows : "Half a ton of stone found in the Pohangina block, near Ashurst, Paimerston, has yielded 60ozs of silver and loz 3dwte of gold. One of the six shareholders has refused £500 for his^ interest." By som« error — either accidental or intentional —this message was : not forwarded to us, and we were indebted to the Chronicle as the medium of the intelligence. As, it was of such a start--1 ling character we at once wireji i« followsto the Association: "Is telegram sent yesterday re silver ore and gold in quartz from Pohangina , reefs thoroughly reliable;" We received the following re^ly : " Telegram re Pohangina reefs received here from Masterton arid Woodville," — this and nothing morel We had already pronounced the telegram a bogus one, and the reply to our inquiry confirmed this opinion. ; We are glad to observe that our contemporary, the Mariawatu DaUy Times also, looked with suspicion on thei news; although confirmatory of the opinions of that journal regarding therichness of the supposed Pohangina reefs. We think the members of the Press Association should join together and demand a thorough explanation of the origin of such a peace of misleading news. There was evidently a desire on ihe part of the originator either to wilfully mislead the publio, or to play a heartless practical joke. The new Salvation Army Barracks will be opened to-morrow morning at 7 a.m. Miss.Lawrence and the New Zealand Comedy Company will appear i 1 the Town flail oh Tuesday next, October 6th. We notice that the Wairarapa press highly of their performances. We^refer our readers to the advertisement which appears elsewhere. *
