The Tar and Feather Case

I*** UNITED PBEBB ASSOCIATION. Wellington. Sept. 23. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning Samuel Waters appeared to answer a summons, granted on an information sworn by Sydney Nimmo Mair, for having committed wilful and corrupt perjury. The information sets forth that the defendant committed perjury in that he stated that he had not lately purchased handcuffs, or that he had not lately given accused (James Walden) a pair of handcuffs, and that he bad not had anything to do with, handcuffs since 1858. Mr Shaw appeared in support of the information on behalf of Mr W. T. L. Travers, and Mr Gully to defend. Before the proceedings commenced. Mr Travers said he desired to apologise to his worship for what had fallen from him on the previous day. . Evidence was then taken of Connor, employed by Messrs Dawson and Co, ironmongers, and evidence to the effect that Walden was accused of assaulting Mair. Had purchased a pair of handcuffs some time in August. Waters was present when the sale took place, and the handcuffs were booked to him. — Stephen Frober, another employe in the ■ame firm, deposed that he saw Waters with .what ho believed to be a pair of - handcuff* in the office one day last month; would not swear they were handcuffs. This cloned the case for the prosecution, and in reply to Mr Gully the bench thought there was a case to answer, upon which Mr Gully applied for a remund until Friday, whea he would be in a position to close defendant's case. The remand -was granted.
