The Minister »f Public Works has promised to reduce the freight on wool on the Wairarapa line, from 6s 3d to 5s per bale, and also to make reductions on merchandise. Ohbistchubch, September 16. This morning Mr Justice Johnstoa gave judgment in the ease of George Downs, on the question whether, in the administration et the bankrupt's assets* the Crown is entitled to priority ove r other creditors. He held that as in England the Crown had such priority before the parsing of the Act of 1883, and as the provision of that act depriving the Crown of that prerogative, except in certain cases, had not been adopted in New Zealand, the right of the Crown must prevail. Auckland, This Day. George Berry, a seaman, stabbed another uamed Bruce last night during a row in the forecastle of the ship Duchess of Argyle. The weapon used was a sheath kuife, which inflicted a wound nearly an inch deep in the left breast. Berry is in custody. The injuries are not dangerous.
