[PEE UNITED PBES3 ASSOCIATION. Napieb, September 11. The residence of A. C. Lhdjj of tlie Murray, Reberts & Co., at Hastings, was totally destroyed by fire at 5 a.m. to-day, the occupants barely escaping in their night clothes. The origin of the first is supposed to oe due t* a defective chimney. Insured in the Colonel far £300, and the furniture for £100 in the JSerth British. A house, owned «nd occupied bf John Swerney at Pukihu, was burned on Wednesdiiy night. The house and furniiure was insured in the S«uth British for £200. The origin of the fire is unknown. Hokitika, September 9. Considerable interest was tuk</n in the election of three borough councillors today, owing to a lady being amongst the c.iudidates. On the poll being declared, it was found that the laJj. Mrs Hall, stood fifth, get ling 86 rotes out of 841. There were eight candidates.
