» l A meeting of the above was held at the Denbigh Hotel on Tuesday evening , to receive the report of the party sent p out to examine the Pohangina reefs. , Mr Gosling was voted to the chair, i He read the following ' REPORT OF EXECTTTIVE COMMITTEE. Feilding, September Bth, 1885. ■ The Chairman, * Feilding Prospecting Association. : Sib, — Your Committee as requested arranged with Messrs Caldwell and Curtis to proceed to the site of the supposed reef on the Pohangina River, and they returned on Monday, bring- . ing with them a quantity of the stone t from the reef, of which we have crushed ; and washed several pieces but cannot I find any gold, although we like the t look of the stone and it is of a kindly - nature. We also submit the report of the prospectors, which we believe itobe a true and correct report. — I am, ' &c, Ghables Bray, 5 Chairman of Committee. i r REPORT OF PROSPECTING PARTY. GENTiiEMEN, — In accordance with ' your instructions we proceeded to the site of the reef discovered by Mr Ander- . son, of Palmerston, and have to report \ that the reef in question is a vein of . slate varying in thickness from, about L 50 to 100 feet, containing a conglom- > eration of quartz vein, or rather lumps > of quartz, and running in the direc--1 tion of from north to south. Mr Anderson has cut into the vein a distance of about six feet deep and says he has ■ discovered a solid vein of quartz, but ' as his workings had been filled up by ■ a slip from above and were not visible, ' we were unable to judge, but were of opinion that Mr Anderson is working ' on a large slip, and has not at present . struck a settled vein. We went on to the top of the hill, on to what is called . No 1 North, and found that the reef i. is covered by a depth of from 60 to 80 3 feet with heavy boulder wash. We ■ then went to the southward and found ■ that the reef crosses the river into the 1 hills in the south, .where we marked ' out a claim and called it. No 1 South. \ We collected a sample of the quartz | and returned to Feilding, and we are I of opinion that Mr Anderson has not found gold to pay. — We are, &c.,~ . L. A. Caldwsll, [ C. Cuktis. . l Mr Carthew proposed, and Mr A. E E. Curtis seconded, That the said L reports be adopted.— Carried. 1 Mr Carthew explained that he had ' tested a portion of the stone brought down by Messrs Caldwell and Curtis, I and although the quartz looked pro- . mising enough, he found no traces of [ gold. ; Mr Bray read a statement showing . the amount of subscriptions collected r and expenses incurred. He reported i a balance in hand of £1 7s lid which, I on the motion of Mr Carthew, seconded I by Mr P. Thomson, was voted to the I Feilding Benevolent Society. Messrs Haultain and J. R. Ander- ■ son from Paimerston and Pohangina respectively, were present. Mr Anderson said that he had crushed some stone from which he was ' working, and had sent the amalgam ! to Wanganui where it had been tested ' by Mr Forbes who had declared that '. he had discovered evidences of gold ; in it. i Mr Haultain said that he had a 1 large collection of specimens at Palm--1 erston, which he. would be glad fa submit to the examination of visitors. 1 An opinion had been expressed by . several that the said specimens looked '< very promising. This concluded the business of the meeting.
A conversation followed, (Mr Bray ' in the chair) as to the advisableness of . of forming a company to ; raise sufficient money to give the ground a more extensive examination, .but nothing ' definite was arrived at. JFh© opinion [ of- those experienced in goldminiug was not much in favor of *hia, and a desire was expressed to aHow c the subject to stand over until the results' of further examination of the stonei had been made known by the Palmer^ ston Association. »' j; A vote of thanks to the chairman' dosed the proceedings. --- , r r~ r J
