No Confidence
The suddenly energetic attitude assumed by the members of the Opposition when they wired for Major Atkinson to return to Wellington in a hurry, appears on his arrival to have suddenly collapsed. The evilday for the Stout- Vogel Ministry has been put off for another indefinite period, or until some member musters up sufficient courage to assume the leadership. We believe that Major Atkinson or Mr Ormond would have taken this part if they could have formed a Ministry which would have commanded a working majority, but seeing how much the House is devided and sub-divided into small parties who are each merely desirous of serving certain local interests, or who are influenced by personal feelings of pique or injured pride, they recognise the almost insurmountable difficulty of forming or creating a party that would be held together by the adhesion of cohesion found in a desire to promote the general welfare of the colony. Under these circumstances it is not surprising that the adverse proposition has not yet been made to the House. We hope that the members will awaken to a sense of the duty they owe to their constituents and allow the business of the country to proceed.
